Parliament Sounds Alarm as Sports Funding Cuts $13 Million Amid 2027 AFCON Concerns
The parliamentary committee dealing with sports and culture has raised worries that insufficient funding might harm Kenya's standing as a reliable host nation for the Africa Cup of Nations.
In their report, the Committee emphasized the problem and cautioned that insufficient funds might compromise Kenya’s position as the hosting country.
"Kenya plans to co-host AFCON 2027 with Tanzania and Uganda. The committee noted, however, that there is no budget allocation in the suggested annual estimates for the hosting fees totaling Sh3.9 billion, due by April 2026," they pointed out.
The national budget for the years 2025–2026 amounts to Sh4.2 trillion; however, financial support for sports has decreased substantially, potentially compromising Kenya’s capability to jointly host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The sports department was allocated a budget of Sh17.46 billion, which is less than the initial proposal of Sh18.59 billion made by the National Treasury.
The Budget and Appropriations Committee (BAC) modified the allocation for sports funding, decreasing funds designated for development to KES 15.84 billion and boosting spending on recurring costs to KES 1.63 billion.
As a co-host of AFCON 2027 alongside Tanzania and Uganda, Kenya must fulfill certain financial commitments, which include paying a hosting rights fee of KSh3.9 billion by April 2026.
The budget estimates presented by BAC at last did not account for the required hosting rights fees, which has sparked worries about Kenya’s readiness for the event.
The BAC did not include any measures to tackle the Afcon hosting responsibilities in their report and stated that no extra funding would be provided to ministries during the present financial year.
Approving the BAC report by the National Assembly is essential because it will influence the budget presentation set to be delivered by Treasury Cabinet Secretary, John Mbadi. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has earlier stressed the importance of allocating funds with consideration to the imminent Afcon duties and obligations.
Considering the present financial limitations, hopes of securing additional funds for sports seem slim, which could jeopardize Kenya's part in hosting the high-profile event.
